FATHER'S DAy is one of those holidays that often gets lost on the calendar. Without a white-bearded patron saint, official bird to baste, or display of multi-colored explosions, how does a quaint holiday like this compete? In fact, we’re lucky to have Father’s Day at all. Consider that Mother’s Day predated it by more than half a century.
It’s time to make Father’s Day more than a deluge of tacky ties and kitschy mugs. Sure, golf is a great place to start. There are countless gadgets, thingamajigs and whatchamacallits that Dad can put in his bag, but there’s more to the man than pitching and putting. What other hobbies does he have? Is he a fashionable guy? Are there any places he dreams of going? Our Father’s Day Gift Guide will help answer those questions.
There is nothing like golf, or sports for that matter, to help illustrate the role of fathers and fathers as role models. Time and again we’re reminded of people like Earl Woods, Archie Manning, and Dale Earnhardt. Not every dad gets this type of attention, but certainly all deserve it.
So start browsing, there’s something for everyone. Don’t wait for the tinsel, stockings and carols to get this gift right.
1 — GRAB THE Sticks
Forget the Blackberries, bosses, and to-do lists. For one afternoon make it just you, him, and as Mark Twain put it, “a good walk ruined.” Take Dad out to your course of choice, and we guarantee you’ll know the man better on the 18th green than you did on first teebox.
2 — Swiss Don’t Miss
The latest impeccable timepiece from Audemars Piguet
The Swiss know chronographic movement like the Japanese know high-definition and Germans know horsepower. It’s no coincidence that Tag Heuer, Omega, and Breitling all hail from the foothills of the Alps. Not to be forgotten is Audemars Piguet, founded in 1875 and still run by descendents of co-founders Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet. The families’ latest creation is the Royal Oak Offshore. A titanium, self-winding flyback chronograph, the Royal Oak Offshore features date display and small seconds at 12 o’clock, 20-minute and six-hour counters, and a regatta 10-minute countdown with last minute indicator. Prices range from $18,100 to $19,700. For more information, visit www.audemarspiguet.com.
3 — Clip Art
M-Clip’s money clip melds high fashion with Boeing engineering.
Throughout the course of history, dads have used everything from sandwich baggies to rubber bands to avoid carrying around cumbersome, brick-thick wallets. M-Clip manages to merge fashion and function with a sleek money clip that has the appeal of an attaché and strength of a 767. M-Clip uses heat-treated aircraft grade stainless steel for the spring to deliver the best metal memory possible, which prevents the clip from springing open randomly or becoming incapable of holding its contents. The clips also uses high quality leather and alligator hides for decoration (corporate logo etching is also available). M-Clips are available at all Bailey Banks & Biddle locations, or can be ordered direct from the M-Clip catalog. Prices range from $240 to $425. For more information, visit www.m-clip.com.
4 — PGA TOUR EVENTS
The Memorial
Jack Nicklaus brings the best to Ohio.
Despite last year’s shift to a week later in the schedule, weather once again caused a ruckus at the Memorial Tournament. When all was finally said and done the interruptions distracted Sweden’s Carl Pettersson the least as he went on to log his second career victory with 12-under par. Carl’s game has been a little soggy this year. He has only rung out 1 top ten finish and is still in search of Tour victory #3. Let’s see if he can go back to back at Jack’s place.
When: May 31-June 3
PURSE: $6,000,000
COURSE: Muirfield Village GC, Dublin, Ohio
DEFENDING CHAMP: Carl Pettersson
TICKETS: 1-877-MT-BADGE

The Buick Open
Michigan’s annual PGA Tour event moves to late June.
The rains didn’t seem to bother Tiger Woods, either, as he notched his 50th PGA Tour victory at last year’s Buick Open with an amazing combined 26 under, 264. This score, however, is still 2 off the tournament record held by Robert Wrenn. The playing of the 2007 Buick is slotted a full month earlier in the schedule. It will mark the 20th anniversary of Wrenn’s 262, the only top finish in his career.
When: June 28-July 1
PURSE: $4,900,000
COURSE: Warwick Hills G&CC, Grand Blanc, Michigan
DEFENDING CHAMP: Tiger Woods
TICKETS: (800) 878-OPEN or www.ticketmaster.com
5 — The inn at manitou
A Great Place for Mom … Too.
The Inn at Manitou Spa, Tennis and Golf Resort is a quaint 35-room luxury property nestled on the shores of Ontario’s Manitouwabing Lake. It sounds hard to find and hard to pronounce three times fast, but it’s not. Located just 50 mostly freeway miles north of Toronto in the town of McKellar (same latitude as Cheboygan), The Inn at Manitou is an old-world style gem with the finest new-world amenities.
A member of the distinguished Paris-based Relais & Châteaux Association, the Inn proudly employs a mostly European-trained staff of more than 70 to staff the Tennis Academy, award winning spa and 11-chef French kitchen.
There’s nothing quaint or French about the golf course though ... this is rough and tumble Canada through and through. The 6,800-yard Thomas McBroom-designed Ridge at Manitou is one of the most stunning inland courses you will ever come across. Golf Digest’s best new Canadian course for 2006, the Ridge was carved from the surrounding forest to reveal natural rock outcroppings of the Canadian Shield and bring to view striking white pines and century-old Hemlocks.

9 — under the collar
Trouble Keeping Your Golf Shirt Under Control? Try CollarSTYX
There is no shortage of golf gadgets; they range from huh to how-bout-that. Take for instance Suunto’s G6 watch and swing monitor, which takes 200-plus measurements including muscle movement and biofeedback to analyze your rhythm and club speed. Or there’s the Twilight Tracer ball, which blinks red after impact so you can avoid losing it. Rarely does a gadget help with physical appearance. Cue CollarSTYX: adhesive shirt tags that keep your collar flat and neat (or as the website puts it: “sharp and professional”) no matter how much humidity or stress it takes on. Stick the inconspicuous clear plastic tag under your collar, and you’ll avoid looking like the Fonz on the back nine. For more information, visit www.collarstyx.com.
